# Creating categories in WordPress

> Learn how to add a new category to your WordPress blog.

[WordPress](https://hosting.com/hosting/platforms/wordpress-hosting/managed-wordpress-hosting/) enables you to categorize blog posts into categories or subcategories, which helps keep the site organized and enables users to more quickly find information. This post will demonstrate how to add a new category to [WordPress](https://hosting.com/hosting/platforms/wordpress-hosting/managed-wordpress-hosting/).

## Creating categories in WordPress

To create a category  in WordPress, follow these steps:

1. Log in to WordPress as the administrator.

2. On the **Dashboard** in the left sidebar, click **Posts**, and then click **Customise**:\

3. Enter the new category name, slug (for SEO), and a parent category (if any):\

4. The newly created category appears on the right sidebar when the categories menu is expanded during the creation of a new post:\

5. Another option is to use the **Add New Category** link. Click the **Add New Category** link, enter a name for the new category, and optionally select a parent category, and then click the **Add New Category** button:\
