# Enabling and disabling PHP error logging using an .htaccess file

This article describes how to configure PHP error logging by using the **log\_errors** and **error\_log** directives in an *.htaccess* file.

## Enabling error logging

You can use the **log\_errors** and **error\_log** directives to configure PHP error logging. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Log in to your account [using SSH](/docs/using-ssh-secure-shell).

2. Use a text editor to add the following lines to the *.htaccess* file. Replace ***path*** with the path to the log file, and replace ***filename*** with the log filename:

   ```
   php_flag log_errors On
   php_value error_log /path/filename
   ```

3. Save the changes to the *.htaccess* file and exit the text editor.

4. To verify that the new setting is active, create a PHP test file that contains the following code in the same directory where the *.htaccess* file is located:

   ```
   <?php phpinfo(); ?>
   ```

5. Load the test file in your web browser, and then search for the name of the directive. The **Local Value** column should display the new setting that you specified in the *.htaccess* file.

## Disabling error logging

To disable error logging, modify the **log\_errors** line in the *.htaccess* file as follows:

```
php_flag log_errors Off
```
