# Giving several people access to a Subversion repository

> We do not host Subversion repositories, so multi-user repository access is set up wherever your repository lives, not on your hosting account.

<Warning>
  **We do not host Subversion repositories.** This article previously described running `svnserve` on a shared hosting account with SSH forced commands. That is not supported and the instructions have been removed.
</Warning>

Multi-user access is configured wherever the repository actually lives:

* **A hosted SVN service** — add users and set their permissions in that provider's interface

* **A corporate or self-hosted server** — whoever administers it controls access

* **Your own [unmanaged server](/docs/managed-vs-unmanaged-vps)** — you have root, so you can run `svnserve` or Apache `mod_dav_svn` and manage users however you like. Not supported by us, but entirely your call

On your hosting account you only need the **client**, which every user can use with their own credentials for the remote repository. See [Using the Subversion (SVN) client](/docs/configuring-subversion).

## If you need shared version control on your hosting account

[Git](/docs/using-git) is fully supported, including repositories hosted on your own account, and handles multiple contributors without a server process. For giving several people file-level access without shell access, see [Setting up SFTP access for multiple users](/docs/setting-up-sftp-access-for-multiple-users).
