# Updating the nameservers at third-party registrars

When your domain is hosted at a third-party registrar, you need to update the nameservers so your website and e-mail can work correctly at hosting.com. This article provides specific resources for domains hosted at common registrars like GoDaddy and Namecheap, and also covers general steps for updating nameserver settings.

## About nameserver updates

Until you update the nameservers for your domain, visitors cannot view the site hosted on your hosting.com account. However, all you need to do is log in to your domain’s registrar and update the nameserver (NS) records to point to hosting.com.

  After you update the nameserver settings for your domain, it can take up to 24 hours for the DNS changes to take full effect.

## Registrar-specific information for updating nameservers

Most registrars provide documentation about how to change the nameservers for a domain you have registered with them. Here is information for some of the most popular registrars:

## General steps for updating nameservers

No matter which registrar hosts your domain, the general steps to update a domain’s nameservers are always the same:

1. Log in to your account at your domain’s registrar.

2. Find where the domain configuration options are located.

3. Update the **Nameserver 1** record for the domain to *ns1.a2hosting.com*. This enables your domain to use hosting.com’s primary nameserver.

   > Some newer hosting accounts, such as those managed directly in the Hosting Panel (not cPanel), use different nameservers. For the **Nameserver 1** record, use *ns1.stableserver.net* instead.

4. Update the **Nameserver 2** record for the domain to *ns2.a2hosting.com*. This enables your domain to use hosting.com’s secondary nameserver.

5. Save the updates.
