Cloudflare Error 1016: Origin DNS Error

Learn how to troubleshoot the "Error 1016: Origin DNS Error" message from Cloudflare on your hosting.com Managed WordPress site.

When pointing your DNS to hosting.com Managed WordPress, you may receive an error message that contains text similar to the following:

Error 1016
Ray ID: 3a1234567890 • 2025-10-16 20:45:39 UTC
Origin DNS Error

There are several reasons this error can occur:

  1. A previous hosting company created what’s known as a partial zone for your domain and it’s conflicting with our Cloudflare setup.
In this case, you need to try and log in to Cloudflare using your email address that a previous host would have had, and delete the site from Cloudflare itself.
  2. Your site used Cloudflare in the past and the domain still exists in an old account, but now uses your registrar or another DNS provider for DNS.
In this case, you need to log in to your Cloudflare account and delete the site from Cloudflare.
  3. There is a delay with Cloudflare seeing your DNS update and it may take some time to propagate.
There is no action required if this is the situation; it may just take a few hours for Cloudflare to see the correct DNS results.
